George Cheever Hazelet, educator, investor, and entrepreneur, leaves his family in Omaha, Nebraska on February 17, 1898 to begin his journey to Alaska and take part in the Alaskan Gold Rush. Hazelet kept a record of his journey in a journal and decades later, thanks to help of his great grandson, Hazelet's journal was able to be published.Hazelet's journal gives an interesting and informative firsthand account of the life of a prospector during the Alaskan Gold Rush. From boarding a train in Omaha that would carry him to the West Coast, to taking a ship that would bring him to the vastness of Alaska. As expected of a journal, Hazelet writes about many topics including his traveling companions, the food he eats, the weather, the animals he encounters, and the beauty and dangers of the Alaskan wilderness. The journal also includes plenty of maps and photographs to help provide more perspective to the entries.I remember learning about the Alaskan Gold Rush in my high school history class and unfortunately this journal had not been published yet, but I feel this journal would work as a great supplemental resource for any high school or college American history class.
